Colonel Everett Young: Command After Catastrophe
Colonel Everett Young assumes command of Destiny under conditions that make ordinary military leadership almost impossible. Injured during the evacuation, cut off from Earth, and responsible for civilians who never volunteered for the mission, he must impose order without the support structure that normally gives command legitimacy. This episode examines Young’s decisions during shortages, mutiny, alien attack, and repeated conflict with Dr. Nicholas Rush. Young values survival and group cohesion, but anger, exhaustion, and personal guilt sometimes shape his judgment as strongly as doctrine. Communication stones allow him to report to Earth and briefly reconnect with his wife, yet they cannot transfer responsibility for immediate choices. He must decide who explores dangerous worlds, how scarce resources are distributed, and when force is justified against people trapped aboard the same ship. Young’s command is defined less by rank than by the continuing need to hold a damaged community together while every mistake could become irreversible.
