Sheppard, McKay, Ford, and Teyla: The First Atlantis Team
The first Atlantis field team combined four people whose skills reflected the expedition’s new reality. Major John Sheppard provided command, flying ability, and access to Ancient systems. Dr. Rodney McKay brought exceptional knowledge of physics, power generation, and Lantean technology, along with a personality that frequently tested the patience of everyone around him. Lieutenant Aiden Ford served as the team’s young Marine weapons specialist, while Teyla Emmagan contributed leadership, language, local relationships, and generations of Athosian knowledge about the Wraith. This episode examines how the team’s contrasting backgrounds shaped early missions through the Pegasus Stargate network. They were expected to locate power sources and allies, but repeatedly became scouts, negotiators, rescue forces, and first responders. Teyla’s inclusion was especially important because Earth personnel otherwise understood little about Pegasus cultures or culling patterns.
