She could describe shipyards, soldiers, Priors, and the political purpose of the campaign. Stargate Command knew that a fleet was coming and that a working Supergate existed somewhere. It did not know what one Ori warship could survive, much less what four could do together.

There had been indicators of the coming technological gap. At Kallana, an Ori force field absorbed attacks and used the defenders’ own energy to help construct the first attempted Supergate. On Tegalus, an orbital weapon built from Ori instructions penetrated Prometheus’s defenses and destroyed Earth’s first battlecruiser. Those events proved that the Ori could provide their followers with systems beyond current Milky Way weapons. They did not establish the exact performance of an Ori capital ship. Intelligence can identify a threat category without providing the data needed for a fire-control solution.

A Free Jaffa vessel investigating unusual energy readings found the completed Supergate near P three Y two twenty-nine. Stargate Command could not dial the planet. The most likely explanation was that the Ori had collapsed the world into a micro-singularity to power the gate, as they had attempted at Kallana. The surviving record does not establish whether P three Y two twenty-nine had an inhabited population when it was destroyed. Colonel Paul Emerson received orders to take Odyssey to the gate, join whatever Jaffa and Tok’ra forces could be assembled, and destroy the structure by any available means. The Asgard had defeated Replicator fleets through extraordinary science and adaptation, but technological superiority is always relative. The Lucian Alliance brought additional Ha’taks and additional political friction. Netan’s force arrived after Odyssey had already lost much of its shields and propulsion. Their main beams transferred enough energy to overwhelm defensive shields and damage internal systems within a handful of strikes. Because the allied ships could not force the Ori to maneuver defensively, the invaders were free to select targets and fire methodically.

The coalition’s varied weapons should have created options. Instead, they revealed how little common technical knowledge the allies possessed. Missile salvos, Ha’tak cannon fire, and Asgard weapons all failed for different engineering reasons that could not be diagnosed during the battle. Sensors aboard Korolev eventually detected a slight shield fluctuation when an Ori ship fired. That was the first indication of a possible vulnerability. Exploiting it required precise timing, shared sensor data, a suitable weapon, and enough surviving ships to execute the attack. The fleet had discovered a crack while the building was already collapsing.

Chekov immediately tried to use that fluctuation. Korolev requested that a neutron bomb be transported aboard an Ori vessel during its firing cycle. The allies might appear to have made a basic mistake by remaining close to the Supergate after their attempts to destroy it failed. Distance, however, would not solve the strategic problem. The control-crystal mission required physical access. The fleet needed to observe activation and engage ships before they scattered into hyperspace. Withdrawal before contact would preserve vessels while conceding the entire Milky Way to an unknown invasion force. The real failure was not a lack of caution at the site. It was the absence of any weapon or doctrine that could convert proximity into control.

At the tactical level, the Ori destroyed or disabled most of the ships opposing them while suffering no confirmed loss. At the mission level, the allies failed to destroy, block, or seize the Supergate. At the operational level, the first wave gained freedom to move against Chulak and begin landing forces in the Milky Way. At the strategic level, the battle demonstrated that the existing coalition could not stop an Ori fleet through direct engagement. These outcomes were related, but not identical. The loss of Korolev was a tactical catastrophe. The intact invasion corridor was the larger strategic defeat.

The human and political cost extended beyond the debris field. Russia lost its first battlecruiser on its first major deployment, along with nearly all aboard. Earth’s small shipbuilding program lost one of only three completed B C three-oh-fours, while Daedalus remained committed to Atlantis. Free Jaffa crews died in ships recently won from the Goa’uld, weakening a nation still struggling to replace imperial command with stable government. The Lucian Alliance lost vessels and gained another reason to distrust Earth. The Asgard learned that even their finest available warship could not dominate this new opponent.

The defeat also created panic at the command level. Stargate Command did not know where the four ships had gone or whether Earth would be attacked next. The International Oversight Advisory considered moving Atlantis’s zero-point module to the Antarctic defense outpost, even though transport would take weeks and nobody knew whether Ancient drones would defeat Ori shields. That discussion was strategically understandable and operationally late. P three Y two twenty-nine had exposed the difference between possessing several extraordinary assets and having them in the correct theater when the enemy arrives.

Later victories should not be used to make the defeated fleet look foolish. Earth eventually received Asgard plasma beam weapons capable of destroying Ori warships. Carter and Rodney McKay later blocked the Supergate by forcing a black-hole-powered wormhole to jump into it from the Pegasus galaxy. Daniel eventually helped send Merlin’s completed weapon through the gate to strike the ascended Ori. None of those capabilities existed in usable form during the first battle. The battle was lost because the allied armada was an emergency collection of powerful ships confronting a mature invasion system. The Ori controlled the corridor, the arrival time, and the technical standard of the engagement. Their shields made allied fire irrelevant. Their beams converted every return shot into another opportunity to destroy the firing ship. The coalition had courage, numbers, and several advanced civilizations represented in the formation. It lacked effective firepower, integrated command, tested countermeasures, and strategic depth.

P three Y two twenty-nine therefore marked more than the destruction of a fleet. It ended the belief that the military balance created by the fall of the Goa’uld and the defeat of the Replicators would protect the Milky Way from the next enemy. The allies had assembled the best force they could reach, around the only doorway the invasion could use, and still failed to close it. Four ships overwhelmed them because the Ori owned every decisive condition except courage. Courage kept people fighting and allowed a few to survive. It could not make obsolete weapons penetrate a shield.
