The Hoffans could poison a feeding Wraith, but they could not stop a hive from destroying the planet. They could vote to accept losses on Hoff, but they could not control how Michael would use the research or how the Wraith would punish other worlds.
The terrible cost was therefore larger than the fifty percent killed by the original serum or the thirty percent killed by Michael’s refinement. The drug transformed survivors into permanent intelligence targets, refugees into political liabilities, and human settlements into suspected biological weapons. It weakened the Wraith, intensified their internal wars, and proved that their feeding process could be attacked. It also encouraged extermination where culling had once left survivors. The Hoffans found a way to make human beings impossible to eat. They never found a way to make them safe.
