S G Nine was associated with diplomatic work, but its earliest failure showed that attaching the word diplomatic to a team did not guarantee diplomatic conduct. Captain Jonas Hanson accepted the worship of a vulnerable population on P three X five one three and used superior technology to establish personal rule. Later diplomatic missions inherited consequences created elsewhere in the program. S G Nine attempted to restore relations with the Latonans after rogue National Intelligence Department personnel had damaged the planet’s defensive system and stolen technology. Earth’s assurances had already been discredited by Earth personnel acting without lawful authority. Most of the team died when the Goa’uld attacked. Diplomats often inherit the bill for operations they did not authorize, a tradition that apparently survived interstellar travel.

Diplomatic personnel also needed security because political control could change during a meeting. A treaty partner might conceal a civil war. A ruler might agree to terms that local military commanders rejected. An enemy could attack because Earth representatives were present. Diplomacy could not be separated cleanly from reconnaissance and force protection. Weapons were not the purpose of the mission, but leaving them behind would not make every counterpart peaceful.

Dedicated combat teams supplied the heavier edge of the system. S G Three was originally organized as a Marine unit and repeatedly served in reconnaissance, search and rescue, reinforcement, and direct-action roles. S G Five also performed combat support in major operations. These units were not infantry battalions compressed into four people. Their value came from preparation for hostile contact, stronger small-unit tactics, and the ability to reinforce specialists without asking the specialists to become something they were not.

Combat teams often protected the gate while another element worked inland. That assignment could look passive until extraction began. The gate was the line of communication, evacuation point, reinforcement route, and only practical road home. Losing it meant that success elsewhere on the planet could still end with the force stranded. Security personnel established fields of fire, monitored the dial-home device, and prepared to hold long enough for scientists, diplomats, civilians, or wounded personnel to pass through.

A team returning hot created the most compressed version of the problem. Personnel might dial Earth while under fire, transmit the identification code, and move through before the enemy reached the event horizon. Stargate Command had to open the iris for its own people without giving pursuers a path into Cheyenne Mountain. The off-world team had seconds to cross. Search and rescue required more than armed reinforcements. S G Two and S G Three repeatedly filled this role, while medical personnel accompanied major operations. A wounded person who could still walk through the Stargate was comparatively easy to evacuate. Communications imposed another limit. Radio passed through an active connection, but teams usually operated without continuous contact once the gate shut down. Scheduled reports allowed headquarters to detect delays, yet a missed check-in did not explain whether the cause was weather, equipment failure, detention, enemy action, or death. Commanders had to decide when to dial again, when to send a probe, and when to commit another team into the same uncertainty.

Off-world fallback sites improved survivability. If Earth could not be reached safely, teams could divert to an Alpha Site when circumstances allowed. These bases provided staging, medical care, research space, and a destination outside the home world’s defenses. They also created targets requiring their own security and supply. Moving a backup facility after compromise became part of the cost. Redundancy is valuable, although the enemy becomes interested once it discovers where the redundancy lives.

The teams’ greatest limitation was scale. Four people could identify a threat, make contact, recover an artifact, or support resistance. They could not occupy a planet, protect every village, or defeat a fleet in orbit. When S G teams achieved large effects, they usually enabled local forces, exploited divisions inside an enemy system, guided larger formations, or connected a battlefield to resources beyond it. Their influence often exceeded their firepower because they changed who possessed information and access.

Local allies were not optional scenery. Abydonians, rebel Jaffa, Tok’ra, and independent human societies provided guides, intelligence, shelter, manpower, and political legitimacy. A team that ignored local interests might complete a narrow task and damage Earth’s long-term position. A team that promised more than Stargate Command could deliver might leave a population exposed after withdrawal. Diplomacy and military planning met in the question every off-world society eventually asked: what happens after the people from Earth go home?

Counterintelligence followed the teams in both directions. A captured member could reveal addresses, procedures, and the location of Earth. An enemy symbiote could use a host’s memories. Replicators, shape-shifters, implanted commands, and false identities challenged normal authentication. The identification transmitter proved that someone carried authorized equipment. It did not prove that the authorized person still controlled the body holding it. Every return was also a medical and security problem until screening caught up.

The numbered teams allowed Stargate Command to learn faster than any one patrol could survive. One team found a world. Another studied its technology. Diplomats negotiated access. Combat personnel protected the follow-on mission. Medical teams contained the consequences when assumptions failed. Reports returned to headquarters, procedures changed, and the next team stepped onto the ramp with a slightly better chance. The system worked because knowledge moved between teams, not because any team was self-sufficient.

The numbers also concealed the human cost. S G Seven, S G Ten, S G Fourteen, S G Seventeen, and several versions of S G Eleven suffered catastrophic losses. Some teams vanished into phenomena no rescue force could overcome. Others died in ambushes, biological attacks, or wars that began after deployment. Stargate Command reused designations because the mission continued. Families received explanations constrained by secrecy, while colleagues saw a familiar number assigned to different faces.

The S G teams were scouts, scientists, diplomats, and soldiers because the Stargate refused to respect the boundaries among those professions. A patrol could discover a civilization before learning its language, locate a resource before recognizing its owner, or win a firefight while losing the political objective. The teams succeeded when specialization created cooperation and failed when one skill was mistaken for complete understanding. Their true weapon was the ability to combine rifle, probe, and translation around one narrow doorway, while remembering that four people were never enough to carry an entire world home.
