Why the Goa’uld Ruled the Galaxy for Thousands of Years
The Goa’uld ruled much of the Milky Way for thousands of years because they combined several advantages into a system that was difficult to challenge all at once. This episode brings together the empire’s central institutions: stolen advanced technology, control of the Stargate network, naquadah-powered industry, sarcophagus-enhanced longevity, Jaffa armies, enslaved human populations, and religions that made occupation appear sacred. Rival System Lords fought constantly, but their fragmentation also made the empire resilient. Killing one ruler usually transferred worlds and forces to another rather than liberating the entire domain. Isolated planets lacked the knowledge, weapons, and communications needed to coordinate resistance, while the Tok’ra remained too few to win openly. The balance changed only when Earth, the Free Jaffa, the Tok’ra, and other powers combined military victories with the destruction of Goa’uld legitimacy. Anubis, the Replicators, and the battle for Dakara then accelerated the collapse. The empire endured through control of belief as much as control of space.
