Alpha Sites, Beta Sites, and Strategic Depth
Off-world bases gave Earth something Stargate Command alone could not provide: strategic depth beyond a single vulnerable gate room. This episode examines Alpha Sites, Beta Sites, and related installations established as evacuation points, fallback headquarters, logistics hubs, and staging bases for operations that could not safely be conducted on Earth. An Alpha Site could preserve personnel and command continuity if the SGC was captured or destroyed, while secondary sites dispersed supplies, allies, and sensitive projects across multiple worlds. The designations were reused as facilities relocated, reflecting how often secrecy, enemy discovery, or planetary danger forced Earth to abandon prepared positions. The episode also considers the logistical challenge of sustaining a base through the gate, including power, food, medical support, communications, defense, and reliable access to a DHD. These sites expanded Earth’s freedom of action, but they were never invulnerable. Strategic depth reduced dependence on Cheyenne Mountain while creating new frontiers that also had to be defended.
