First Strike: Earth Attacks the Asuran Homeworld
“First Strike” was Earth’s attempt to destroy the Asuran threat before its expanding fleet could attack Atlantis. The Apollo carried Horizon, a weapons platform containing multiple naquadria-enhanced nuclear warheads, and launched a surprise bombardment against military targets on Asuras. This episode examines the logic and consequences of the preemptive strike. The attack destroyed ships and infrastructure but failed to eliminate the Replicator civilization, whose nanite population could survive, rebuild, and retaliate. Oberoth answered with a satellite weapon that fired a continuous energy beam at Atlantis from beyond normal defensive range. Unable to withstand the attack indefinitely, the expedition raised the city’s shield, activated its stardrive, and attempted to leave the planet. Damage during the escape stranded Atlantis in space with failing power and uncertain coordinates.
