The First Wraith Awakening
The Atlantis expedition awakened the Wraith far earlier than many hives were expected to rise. During the first rescue mission, Sheppard’s team entered a Wraith facility to recover captured Athosians and expedition personnel. Colonel Sumner was interrogated and fed upon, allowing the Wraith to learn of Earth and its vast human population. Sheppard killed Sumner to end his suffering, then killed the Keeper responsible for regulating the dormant hive. This episode examines how that tactical rescue produced a strategic disaster. The Keeper’s death triggered the awakening of other Wraith, creating immediate competition for food and directing attention toward Atlantis. The expedition had not merely discovered an old enemy; it had disturbed the mechanism that kept most of that enemy asleep.
