The Tollan: Advanced Technology and Fatal Neutrality

The Tollan were human descendants whose scientific development placed them centuries ahead of modern Earth. Their mastery of phase-shifting, compact power systems, communications, and ion-cannon defenses allowed them to resist ordinary Goa’uld forces and rebuild on Tollana after the destruction of their original world. Tollan policy grew from the catastrophe caused by an earlier decision to assist a neighboring civilization, which used shared technology to destroy itself and destabilize the Tollan homeworld. The survivors concluded that less-developed societies would inevitably misuse what they received. Figures such as Narim sought friendship with SG-1, while Omoc and the Tollan Curia defended neutrality and technical noninterference as matters of survival. Their confidence rested on the belief that rational institutions and superior defenses could keep galactic conflict at a distance. That position was neither simple cowardice nor pure arrogance, but it underestimated enemies willing to adapt. Tollan neutrality preserved independence temporarily, then left the civilization dangerously isolated when its defenses were overcome.
